“We Are The Champions” Annual Game Awards!
December 6th is right around the corner, and that means The Game Awards is going to be broadcast world wide at 2030 hrs EST on YouTube, twitch, mixer and many other places. I have weird feelings about award shows. Something like the Oscars makes me unreasonably irritable, I feel like it is a giant fluffing of people in the movie industry of themselves. But I will happily watch and cheer on The Game Awards. Look I am not perfect, and I am ok with that. So this post (and subsequent podcast) I am going to list the nominees for most of the awards, and then pick what game I want to win (italic), and which game I think will win (bold), with a slight break down of the whys. So without further ado…
Game of the Year:
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Celeste
- God Of War
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Monster Hunter: World
- Red Dead Redemption 2
Both games have fantastic stories, both games were visually stunning, and both games sold very well. I am a bit partial to RDR2, mostly because I don’t own a Playstation 4, and maybe that skews my own views but I honestly believe RDR2 deserves any and all of the accolades. I will say that this list of games is a strong one, with fantastic games (I have no inkling into Celeste because I haven’t played it nor watched anyone else play it.)
Best Ongoing Game:
- Destiny 2: Forsaken
- Fortnite
- No Man’s Sky
- Overwatch
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Fortnite is what it is, it is the juggernaut of the current gaming world. I am not a fan of the game, for many reasons, but there is no doubt in my mind that it will win this category. Rainbow Six Siege on the other hand, I do play, I do enjoy, and other than a few recent missteps with their trying to expand to the Chinese market, has been fantastic the past couple of years.
Best Game Direction:
- A Way Out
- Detroit: Become Human
- God of War
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Red Dead Redemption 2
I can’t say enough about this game. I absolutely love it, and have enjoyed playing every minute of it. That being said any of these games could take this award.
Best Narrative:
- Detroit: Become Human
- God of War
- Life is Strange 2: Episode 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Red Dead Redemption 2
Detroit, was a fantastic game to watch with a great story and interesting choices. It is a game that makes me wish I had a Playstation. Honestly this one could go to any on the list, (though I wasn’t a fan of A Way Out but that is mostly because of the split screen) as they all have great stories.
Best Art Direction
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- God of War
- Octopath Traveler
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Return of the Obra Dinn
HAVE YOU SEEN HOW PRETTY THIS DAMN GAME IS? No knocks on the other games on the list they are all lovely to look at, though I think Bendy and the Ink Machine should have been considered for their artwork as well.
Best Performance
- Bryan Dechart as Connor, Detroit: Become Human
- Christopher Judge as Kratos, God of War
- Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Roger Clark as Arthur Morgan, Red Dead Redemption 2
- Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker, Marvel’s Spider-Man
Can we give them all an award? Every single one of these people were fantastic in their roles… I have no real reason as to why I picked Christopher Judge over the others other than “BOY!” became a meme.
Best Independent Game
- Celeste
- Dead Cells
- Into the Breach
- Return of the Obra Dinn
- The Messenger
I chose to refrain from picking who would win because honestly my Indie Game of the Year was left completely off every list, Kingdom Come: Deliverance was one of the best games I have ever played. I have a feeling it was left off this list because of other reasons, but Celeste will win this category, especially since it wont win the overall GotY award.
Now there are plenty of other awards listed, but I don’t feel the need to go through like Best Mobile game (insert eye roll here) and best e-sports moment. E-Sports is one of the hardest things to judge for me, since each E-sport game has a different audience, and most E-sport audiences stick to just one game, or genre. But we will revisit this list next week after the awards and we can laugh at how wrong I was.
Love and Tentacles,
